Tarot as an Effective Tool for Self-reflection

Emily McGill, Columbia University, New York, USA

Abstract

This session presents research from my integrated project at Columbia University's Spirituality Mind Body Institute on the practical use of tarot cards for psychological exploration. The focus is on demystifying tarot and making it accessible for those interested in it as a tool for self-reflection and improved clarity. The session includes an introduction to the cards and deck structure, overview of collected qualitative data, and a collective tarot reading experience, offering a straightforward understanding of tarot's therapeutic potential. The core of the presentation delves first into the empirical evidence gathered from my integrated project. Initial data collected from seekers using tarot for guidance showed a significant impact, with 100% reporting a deeper understanding of their path forward. Key takeaways from this session include addressing cultural biases surrounding tarot for psychological exploration and recognizing the tangible benefits supported by empirical evidence. Participants will gain practical insights into how tarot cards can serve as a valuable tool for self-reflection and clarity in their lives through a first-hand tarot experience. The session is designed for professionals seeking a concise, evidence-based understanding of tarot's potential impact on psychological well-being.
